The NEF Research Grant Programme is dedicated to supporting academic and scientific research aimed at understanding nature, ecosystems, and biodiversity, specifically to foster conservation actions based on scientific data in developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region. This initiative seeks to bolster the research capabilities of young researchers, enabling them to enhance their skills, knowledge, and experience through their research activities focused on conservation.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be nationals of developing countries within the Asia-Pacific region, under 40 years of age. Eligible candidates include researchers with at least three years of experience or full-time doctoral students, both of whom must currently work or study in the specified target countries. Projects should focus on nature conservation, involving fieldwork and the applicant’s original research. Applicants should not have other ongoing or recent NEF-funded projects.
Funding Amount with What can be funded:
The programme offers up to 1,000,000 Japanese yen per project for up to two years. Funds can cover expenses related to field surveys and analysis, local travel, reference materials, and labor costs necessary for the proposed research. Ineligible expenses include salaries, equipment purchases that could be sourced through the applicant’s institution, and general administrative costs.

Interested applicants should submit an application form, budget and timetable, background information, and a recommendation letter via email to the NEF Secretariat. Supplementary materials such as electronic maps and published scientific papers may also be submitted. Application deadlines are 16 April and 15 October 2024 for projects starting from August 2024 and February 2025, respectively.
